A material described as biodegradable may only break down under particular conditions. And industrially compostable plastics require controlled composting facilities — they are not necessarily suitable for home composting and should not be expected to disappear safely in nature.

Claims around biodegradability also depend on whether materials actually perform as intended under real-world conditions.

These materials can have useful applications, but they are not a universal solution. Industry, policymakers, municipalities, waste-management systems and infrastructure all have major responsibilities.

But what happens after a product is used still matters. Returning deposit packaging, sorting correctly, avoiding litter and choosing products designed for recycling all influence whether materials remain within the system.

Circularity depends on shared responsibility — and everyday behaviour is one part of it.

                                                            (13)

Plastic packaging is always the less sustainable choice

Packaging is often judged by appearance. Glass can feel more natural, paper more environmentally friendly and plastic less sustainable.

Lifecycle assessment tells a more complex story.

The environmental impact of packaging depends on the raw materials and energy required to produce it, the amount of material used, its weight during transportation, its ability to protect the product, whether it can be reused or recycled and what happens after use.

Recent lifecycle assessments conducted by c7-consult for ALPLA show that lightweight PET packaging — particularly when it contains a high proportion of recycled material — can have a lower environmental impact than alternative packaging systems in a number of applications.

Weight is an important part of the equation. Heavier materials require more energy to transport throughout production, distribution, collection and recycling. Glass, for example, also requires high temperatures during production. Reusable glass can improve its performance over multiple cycles, but transport distances and actual reuse rates remain important factors.

The same principle applies across materials. Cardboard-based packaging may perform particularly well in certain applications, while other products may benefit from lightweight plastic or reusable systems.

There is no universally sustainable packaging material. The objective is to use the right amount of the right material for each application — based on performance and lifecycle data, rather than perception alone.

MYTHS &
